I feel this may be of particular interest to [info]zekkass , because if/when this comes to fruition, i may have to demand she come to the city to see it with me

Anyway!

So, rechecking my upcoming broadway productions, i find out - much to my delight- that they haven't given up on the musical production of 'Angels', a musical based on John Milton's Paradise Lost. The concept has had a rocky start, but i'm pleased to see it's "In the works"

Angels' dream run nears reality on Broadway

THEY dreamed a dream. Two unknown Sydney musicians are close to staging their first major production on New York's famed theatre strip, Broadway, seven years after they started work on the project.

Composer Ken Lai and his collaborator Marcus Cheong first met at the University of Sydney in the mid-1990s where they produced amateur musicals. After finishing their degrees, they started work on their most ambitious project, Angels The Musical, a multimillion-dollar production which includes aerial choreography.

Loosely based on poet John Milton's Paradise Lost, the musical is described as the "timeless tale of good versus evil, hope versus despair, angels versus demons". And a big musical deserves a large audience which is why Lai, Cheong and director Richard Fowler took the show to Broadway first. "It was a crazy idea," said Lai, who has given up his career as an aeronautical engineer.

"Marcus was of the opinion that things don't get produced in Australia that aren't imported from Broadway or the West End. We thought that if we wanted to have a work produced in Australia, we would have to go overseas first."

The production team managed to attract the support of veteran Broadway impresario Bob Blume among others.

They raised $17million from investors but just weeks before opening night the backing disappeared. The rocky journey to Broadway has been documented in a four-part TV series, Angels in New York, to air on SBS from February 18.

Cheong remains in New York working on having Angels produced. Fowler is about to return to the US to meet investors and theatre owners.
